Fundraising at JB
A massive thank you to everyone who supported our sweatband/headband charity fundraiser last week for ELHAP and all the great work they do for children with disabilities.
The students raised a fantastic £281 for the charity and, in doing so, showed their commitment to Article 23 of the UN CRC which states that "A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and, as far as possible, independence and to play an active part in the community"

Local Democracy in Action
Some of our Article 12 ambassadors were very lucky to be invited to the Redbridge Council Chambers at Ilford Town Hall today. They got to attend the External Scrutiny Panel in session at an earlier than usual time to accommodate the children from Redbridge schools in attendance.

During the session, the students were able to hear what the council were hoping to achieve with Hainault Forest, should their funding bid be successful over the coming months. They heard about the great work being done at the Redbridge Drama Centre as well as the Music Centre and how they are working closely on exciting collaborations for the benefit of local residents.
The children were given the opportunity to address the councillors and had some interesting questions on knife crime, the local environment, as well as the effects of social media on Redbridge youth. Further questions were welcomed by the councillors and we hope to submit some in the future through the connections we made today.

The ambassadors enjoyed getting to see where local democracy takes place, getting to meet some of their own representatives, see how votes are taken in the main chambers and meet with the Deputy Mayor of Redbridge.

World Book Day 2019
On Thursday 7th March, pupils and teachers at John Bramston celebrated World Book Day.
Everyone really enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters!
Each year group, from Reception up to Year 6, took part in a Wow Word Walk through school hunting for new and exciting vocabulary. Every class enjoyed discovering new Wow Words and learning their meanings.
All of the classes took part in a Reading Robin at the end of the school day where each class shared a story with a different class teacher. Pupils were very excited to find out which teacher would be paying them a visit to 'share a story'!
Pupils were given a £1 book token to spend - how will you spend yours?

Supporting Redbridge to Make it More Child Friendly
Over the past few weeks, the Article 12 Ambassadors at John Bramston have been working with Redbridge Council to develop their Making Redbridge More Child-Friendly initiative.
The council have been looking for meaningful ways to engage children in the initiative and to encourage the sharing of children's ideas and opinions. They asked the children of John Bramston to help test their questionnaire before it is sent out to all Redbridge schools.
The Article 12 Ambassadors took to this task extremely positively, first asking their classes to reflect on the language of the questionnaire:
Once this was completed, the ambassadors read the updated questions to their classes and took suggestions.
Last Friday, a member of the council, Mr Nazmul Haque, visited John Bramston Primary to attend one of our Article 12 meetings so that he could listen to the ideas put forth by the students of J.B. He was very impressed with the work of the ambassadors saying:
"It was really valuable and has given me a clearer picture of how we want to engage with other schools going forward."
Well done to everyone involved, those who took an active part in discussions as well as those who contributed to our post-it poster suggesting improvements to the borough. Article 12 in action!

- What changes to the wording could lead to a greater understanding?

A Warm Welcome For Wes
What a great day we had today! Not only did the students get a well deserved break for the Easter holidays, just before they finished up we had the honour of welcoming our local MP, Mr. Wes Streeting, into our school.
Mr. Streeting addressed a special assembly to help the children understand his role in government and to take questions from the children.
The John Bramston students did themselves proud today with some interesting and insightful questions and Mr. Streeting gave us an understanding of politics from the inside.
On top of all that, our Article 12 Ambassadors were able to support Unicef's OutRight 2018/2019 campaign for cleaner air by presenting a letter from the John Bramston students, signed by the Article 12 Ambassadors, asking for Mr Streeting to bring the campaign to the attention of the Secretary of State for the Environment, Mr. Michael Gove MP.
Thank you very much to Mr. Streeting for spending some of his valuable time with us here at John Bramston Primary today.

The John Bramston Signing Choir have recorded their performance for our entry into the Strictly Come Signing competition! Our video will be sent to the judges who will decide if we make it through to the next round of the competition and perform at Hawkey Hall.
Our signing superstars have worked tirelessly to master such a complicated performance involving signing, signing, choreography and confidence and we are so very proud of them.

Kingswood - Day 1
We have arrived!
After a short journey east and a little bit south, we arrived at our destination, greeted by the pouring rain. But that didn't stop us. First activity, orienteering.
After a bit a trial and error, the Year 6 children soon got into the swing of reading a map and locating their targets.
Dinner next and then back out for a spot of mini Olympics. Not your standard Olympics mind you, rather some interesting team activities to get everyone into the mood for the rest of the week.
Check back again tomorrow for further updates.

Kingswood Day 2
The children are all tucked up in their beds fast asleep after a long and eventful day. Let's take a look at all of the exciting activities we took part in today!
Fencing:
High Equilibrium:
Obstacle Course:
Eating:
We had a lovely surprise for one of the group today who was celebrating his birthday. He never suspected he was getting a birthday cake.
Team Tech:
The idea here was to create something by assembling the bits and pieces provided, with some very strange results indeed!
A four-legged animal.
A designer 'Gucci' belt - very high fashion we were told.
'Bobby'
A working shoe rack.
Scrapheap Challenge:
For this activity, the children were tasked with using scrap material to create a cage to protect a water balloon. The aim was to drop the 'protected' balloon from a height and stop it from exploding. Watch the videos below to see how it all went down.
Check back tomorrow for more updates!

Kingswood - Day 3
Another day down at the Year 6 residential trip and it was a wet one, in more ways than one! Not only did we encounter a serious downpour in the afternoon, we started the day with the 'nightline', a blindfolded sensory trail that got a little bit wet and muddy (to say the least). Take a look below...
